#MeettheSingers #Soprano Antonina Chehovska Age 30: I am originally from Ukraine, but I am an American citizen now. I sang all my life at church and studied piano and violin as a child, but I started my classical training at 22 years old. I have many favorite operas, but my dream roles are Tatiana (Eugene Onegin), Desdemona (Otello), and Mimi of course (La Bohème). I have to say that I love "operatic singing" more than anything. The biggest reason I wanted to sing opera was because I was amazed at what the voice can do. Still to this day I am amazed at the human voice's capabilities. How is it possible that it carries over the orchestra, fills the house and sort of hits your face? I understood how difficult it was to achieve free and pure vocal production so that's why I said, I want to do it because it's very difficult and when it's done completely right, it is the most divine thing in the world. Now I have matured as a complete artist, not just someone who wants to sing but also has something to say. Yes, I love to sing, I love it more than anything else, but the purpose of singing is much greater than just to sing and the awe of the difficulty of it. I have something to share with the world now, more than the voice, my heart. Regarding opera itself, it has the deepest emotions any human can experience and connect to. #OperaIdols #DistrictAuditions #NationalCouncil #EasternRegion #MetOpera
I began singing opera when I was 9 years old in the children’s chorus of the old #MeettheSingers #Tenor Alan Briones Age 24: New York City Opera. I haven’t stopped since. Opera is the prism through which I see the world. It is the most multi-faceted live performing art there is and it showcases the best that human beings are capable of doing with their voices. I dream of singing all the great roles of the tenor tradition, especially in the operas I performed as a kid, like Carmen and Tosca. I also hope to perform new works and thus be part of the continuing life of this immortal art form. #OperaIdols #DistrictAuditions #NationalCouncil #EasternRegion #MetOpera
#MeettheSingers #Soprano Valencia Callens Age 24: I have always loved singing; my mom utters I was singing around the house after my first words. Officially at the age of 8, my mom asked me to sing Amazing Grace for church and I’ve been singing ever since. I discovered the beauty of opera my freshman year of college with a double bill of Purcell’s Dido & Aeneas and Britten’s Burning Fiery Furnace.
I love opera because of the many different elements that come together to make it, whether it’s the beautiful music, the intriguing story line, the emotion, the languages, the costumes, and so forth. It is just so amazing how it wouldn’t be opera if one of those elements were left out. Cio Cio San’s tragic romance in Madama Butterfly is my favorite story line. I’m completely entranced by the passion of that story, her longing for Pinkerton is so emotional. It doesn’t matter how many times I read the libretto or see the production, I just hate Pinkerton for what he does to her. I would love to sing that role one day. #OperaIdols #DistrictAuditions #NationalCouncil #EasternRegion #MetOpera
