As the current committee starts the fifth season running the auditions here in the Eastern Region, we thought it might be fun to take a look back and see what our winners from the last four years have been up to...almost like a quinquennial (or quadrennial).
First up is Matthew Anchel, bass, from NYC who was a Grand Finalist in 2013. Since then, Matthew has covered in five productions at the Met and sung with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis, Opera San Jose, Knoxville Opera, Opera San Antonio, Savannah Voice Festival, Loft Opera and Music Academy of the West.
He also has a thriving voice studio in NYC where he teaches not only professional opera singers, but also musical theater actors, pop singers and many more. You can find all the details on Matthew's website.
Coming up, he will be singing Handel's Messiah in December in Annapolis (MD) and Don Alfonso in Cosí Fan Tutte in St. Louis in January 2016.
Opera Idols: What did participating in the National Council Auditions teach you?
Matthew Anchel: You have to keep working hard even after you get to the Final Round; it’s not a free pass, it’s a stepping stone.
OI: How has participating changed your career? What did it mean to you to win?
MA: Being in the Finals opened doors for me and I’m thankful for that. I got to sing Verdi with the Met Orchestra on that amazing stage in my hometown…it meant the world to me.
OI: What was your experience like auditioning?
MA: The volunteers that run the Eastern Region are amazing and always made me feel at ease in a stressful situation.
OI: What advice would you give to this year's singers?
MA: Enjoy the ride.
